The days are getting longer and lighter and the nights are getting shorter and warmer. It can only mean one thing: the long-awaited Minnesota summer is upon us. Heading into the new season there is an intense competition for our time-work, internships, home projects, family vacations, softball games or backyard BBQs with friends.

For many of us, the prevailing theme of a Minnesota summer is relationships. Whether you're enjoying the sunshine on a walking trail or grabbing a quick bite to eat on a patio, it's always better with a friend. No matter how busy we may be, we make room to spend time with those who matter most to us.

This summer, you're invited to bring your friends and family to Second Harvest Heartland. Do twice as much good by bringing a friend to volunteer! Volunteering with a friend optimizes your time while simultaneously maximizing your hunger relief impact. Plus, it's more fun with someone by your side.

Samantha Solberg, Second Harvest Heartland staff member and volunteer, spent time reflecting on her own experience bringing a group of friends to volunteer at Second Harvest Heartland for her birthday.

What motivated you to put together a group volunteer shift in honor of your birthday?

I was looking for a way to engage people that wasn't a typical birthday party. Service is super important to me and a huge part of my life. It felt natural to want to do it at Second Harvest Heartland.

How did you invite your friends to your birthday packing shift?

I put a post on social media and got a great response from friends! Many said they had volunteered there in the past or have wanted to volunteer at Second Harvest Heartland, but hadn't done it yet.

What did your friends think of volunteering together?

My friends had a great time. We did rice packing and afterwards people joked that they didn't know it would be a workout! When we were done with the shift, friends talked about coming back or bringing their families. It's fun! It's the fastest two hours you'll experience.

What advice would you give to people thinking about bringing their friends or networks?

Volunteering together at Second Harvest Heartland is a great bonding opportunity. You get to chat and catch up. It's perfect for getting in one-on-one time and doing good at the same time.
