Harris Gulbransen, a senior at Breck School, has participated in many volunteer activities since middle school. In 7th grade, Harris was introduced to Second Harvest Heartland and volunteered there once a month. In high school, Harris volunteered every week at Every Meal where he packed weekend food bags for school children.

This summer, Harris' irregular schedule didn't allow him to get a summer job, but it was perfect for taking on shifts at Second Harvest Heartland. Harris has a busy schedule of cross-country practice, preparation for university entrance exams, hanging out with friends, and travel with family. Even with this busy schedule, he had some free time. He created an account on Volunteer Central and signed up for three to four shifts a week over a five-week period.

Harris says, "I enjoy packing food. It's relaxing, productive and helps the community. At Second Harvest Heartland, I can take my mind off of everything else."

Harris has had the opportunity to pack all types of food. His favorite is the bread because it "smells so good," but he has also packed other food items like apples, sweet potatoes, and onions (which he says get "a bad rap"). He says all foods are fun and easy to pack.

Harris has invited friends and family to volunteer but also takes shifts by himself. He enjoys meeting other volunteers. Harris recommends signing up through Volunteer Central as soon as you know your schedule because sometimes shifts fill up.

Harris describes Second Harvest Heartland as a fun community with a "very good vibe." He says, "I enjoy the music played throughout the warehouse. The leaders are helpful and make volunteering a good experience. Everything is streamlined and efficient. I don't have to worry about doing something wrong."

Once school starts, Harris will continue volunteering as his schedule allows. "Second Harvest Heartland is great for the community but also great for volunteers. Mentally, it's a nice break. For me, it is stress relief, a fun place where I can feel good about what I'm doing."
