Anti-Harassment and Complaint:
Second Harvest Heartland strictly prohibits and does not tolerate unlawful harassment against anyone engaging with the organization, including volunteers, based on any protected characteristic. This commitment extends to prohibiting sexual harassment, and any unwelcome conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.
Declared Emergencies:
In the event of a declared emergency (such as severe weather or a disaster), Second Harvest Heartland will prioritize volunteer safety while maintaining operational continuity. Volunteers will be notified if facilities are closed, and management will provide instructions regarding necessary adjustments to their normal reporting location and/or times, especially if they are required to maintain critical functions.
Dress Code:
Volunteers are expected to dress appropriately for the type of work they are performing and for their specific department, recognizing that they represent Second Harvest Heartland to the public. All volunteers must also wear their volunteer badge in a visible manner each day.
Drugs and Alcohol:
Second Harvest Heartland maintains a strict drug and alcohol-free workplace, prohibiting all volunteers from reporting to work or performing tasks while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or illegal substances. Volunteers must also notify their leader if taking any prescribed or over-the-counter medication that may impair their ability to perform their duties safely.
Personal Use of Donated Items:
Volunteers are strictly prohibited from removing or consuming any donated food or nonfood items from the building for personal use. Any violation of this policy may result in immediate termination, and the organization reserves the right to search personal belongings brought into the workplace
Reporting Concerns (Whistleblower)
This policy provides an avenue for volunteers to report suspected wrongdoing, such as fraud, accounting irregularities, or workplace violence, in line with the organization's high ethical standards. Volunteers are encouraged to report these concerns to management and are guaranteed protection from retaliation for doing so.
Security:
All volunteers must adhere to facility security measures, secure access materials, and understand they have no expectation of privacy regarding their storage spaces or belongings, which may be searched at any time. To prevent theft, the organization may inspect persons and items entering or leaving the facility, and volunteers should not bring items they wish to avoid inspection of onto the premises.
Workplace Violence:
Second Harvest Heartland maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any form of workplace violence, threats, or the possession of weapons on company premises. Any potentially dangerous situation must be reported immediately to a leader or HR, and violations will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
