As 33 Milaca High School National Honor Society members stepped off the school bus at Second Harvest Heartland, they were greeted by an enthusiastic volunteer engagement team. After a quick orientation, the high schoolers started packing onions for distribution at local food shelves. During their shift, they listened to music and sang, but most importantly, they helped get resources to the 1 in 7 kids in Minnesota who face hunger today. This shift was about kids helping kids.

During their time volunteering, the team learned more about Second Harvest Heartland and the exact impact of their work. One interesting fact they discovered is that food at Second Harvest Heartland that doesn't pass inspection for repacking is picked up by Barthold Farms and recycled into animal feed.

"Packing onions sounds awful, but Second Harvest Heartland made it upbeat and enjoyable. The students had fun doing good," said Damian Fish, Milaca High School's math teacher and the group's advisor. This is the second time the group has made the journey to Second Harvest Heartland, and Damian plans to return at least once a year. "The available [volunteer] spots filled up in a minute.

"To other youth groups looking for volunteer opportunities, Volunteer Center Manager Nora Dragich says, "Please come back! Youth bring a different energy that invigorates my team who work hard to ensure an engaging volunteer experience."In January 2022, shifts will again be available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays during the day. After a long absence during the pandemic, youth at least 14 years old will be welcomed back. Nora says, "We miss youth groups. They ask questions we haven't thought of, and they can make a big impact in a short amount of time. Youth groups are amazing!"
