Recently, the Volunteer Engagement team has been focusing on microaggressions, which are subtle verbal or non-verbal insults or condescending messages communicated toward a marginalized person. This is often done by someone who may be well-intentioned but unaware of the impact of their words or actions. Comments such as "May I lift that for you?" or "Your English is very good" may seem helpful but might be harmful.

This focus came to light as staff experienced or were witness to microaggressions occurring in the Volunteer Center. In response, leaders Kelsey Wright and Jake Hansen started an employee group to make improvements. The group partnered with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) staff to develop training for the entire Volunteer Engagement team. Everyone had an opportunity to acknowledge issues, share frustrations, validate feelings and address situations.

Kelsey says, "Intent does not negate impact" when talking about how microaggressions usually come from those with good intentions. And Jake noted that, "Microaggressions are the emotional equivalent of being slapped in the face." Microaggressions in the Volunteer Center could lead to employee burnout or to volunteers unmotivated to return to Second Harvest Heartland.

In the training, staff also addressed how to create an inclusive, welcoming, equitable and accessible space for all staff and volunteers in the Volunteer Center. "Interacting with volunteers is the best part of the job," says Kelsey. "Volunteers and staff feeling safe is the bare minimum, feeling welcome is the goal."

The Volunteer Engagement team will continue conversations around microaggressions and keep looking for ways to improve the experience for all in the Volunteer Center, which, as Jake describes, "…is a radically inclusive space where community can happen." Second Harvest Heartland is committed to creating a safe space for staff and volunteers, and the Volunteer Engagement team is dedicated to ensuring all are welcome.
