Through our Senior Hunger Program, Second Harvest Heartland provides a box of nutritious food each month to low-income seniors 60 years and over. Volunteers in this role provide excellent customer service to our seniors and works alongside other volunteers to ensure the distribution runs smoothly. Site Volunteers need to be comfortable with face-to-face interaction, working with participants who may speak a different language, and comfortable working with confidential information.
Where will you be volunteering:
What You'll Do in this Role:
- Assist Site Partner with set up for food box distribution
- Assist participants in moving through sign-in process and food pick-up area
- Verify participants income eligibility once every three years
- Help participants lift and load a 35+ lb. box of groceries repeatedly throughout the shift
Minimum Requirements:
- Friendly, helpful customer service demeanor
- Willingness to interact patiently and with empathy with participants from all ethnicities
- Must be reliable and punctual
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Ability to be on your feet for the duration of the distribution
- Ability to meet Second Harvest Heartland guidelines for background check: we will be conducting criminal background checks for all volunteers in this position. We reserve the right to decline working with a volunteer, or dismiss a current volunteer, based on the results of the background check.
Time Requirements and Schedule:
- Total time requirement: Once monthly for 1.5 – 4 hours, for a minimum of 6 months
- Schedule: Daytime hours required; exact schedule (date/time) varies by site based. See locations above for site's distribution schedule.
